- TẬP 1: DÀNH CHO GIÁO VIÊN THCS PHẦN I. ĐỔI MỚI PHƢƠNG PHÁP DẠY HỌC BÀI VIẾT SỐ 1 TRANSITION FROM READING TO SPEAKING IN TEACHING THE NEW TEXTBOOK Learning a language is a complex and long process as anyone who has tried will agree. One of the most difficult and frustrating things is making the transition from reading to speaking or listening to writing in the most effective and convenient way. In this writing, I would like to recommend a more practical way of transmitting from reading to speaking in junior high school classrooms. I- Reading skills There are a number of skills involved in reading for example predicting, skimming, scanning and recognizing links. We need to work with our students to analyze what these skills are and to show them how they can get better at these skills. We also need to ask comprehension questions and conduct activities that will practice these specific skills. 1- Reading skill advice - Establishing the context - Predicting the content - Skimming for main ideas - Scanning for specific details - Guessing meaning in context 2- Pre-Reading notes Goals Activities Motivate students True/False prediction Activate students‟ knowledge Open prediction Pre-questions Make the students familiar with the language needed Using pictures, mind map or videos - Try to attract the students‟ attention into the reading task by giving them some questions, pictures or videos so that they will be eager to the reading tasks in while reading. 3- While reading: Use suitable reading strategies to deal with the reading tasks. Focusing on: - Reading the first or last sentence for a while and say what the paragraph is about. - Skimming to underline the key words. - Scanning to locate the answers in the text. - Using different kinds of words to complete the reading tasks. - Using sachmem.vn offline to save time as much as possible. 4- Transition from reading to speaking - Use both post-reading and pre-speaking together in order to effectively complete skills 1 6
- Speaking Reading -Pre-reading + Organizing -While-reading ideas + Practicing the Expressions + Producing full- length response Generating ideas focusing on expressions (post-reading & pre-speaking) Ex: English 8- Unit 5 – Skills 1 14 biggest festivals in Viet Nam - Using media: Ask students to watch the video. + Name the festivals. + Find out the four most favorite festivals. + List the reasons why one festival is the most popular. - Using “task based learning” or “learning by teaching”: + Ask students to role-play a tourist guide to introduce the festival they like after working in small groups. + Use pictures or projector to present to the class. + The groups share their products. We can use these techniques when transmitting form listening to writing. II- Speaking skill Why do students so often highlight speaking as their biggest problem? Partly because of the demands of speaking and partly because of the way speaking is often taught. So what can we do in the classroom to prepare students for real speaking? - What do the lessons need? - Practical suggestions - What should I teach? - How do I get students to use new expressions into practice and real practice? Ex: English 8- Unit 5 – Skills 1 Task 2: What things should you take when you go to a festival? - Give pictures suggestions. - Use website: to draw pictures for speaking. 7
- - Present some expressions. - Practice speaking in pairs, groups - Try to put them into real practice. Ex: Which festival in your country do you really like? Let us talk about it. III- Project based learning in teaching skills 1 and skills 2. Why not? - Use project based learning as an important way to check the students‟ progress after teaching each skill if possible. - Try to find out what your students are interested in. Then try to incorporate that theme into your annual planning. Think about the resources you have, about possible final products (a speech, a play, a video, a poster,), and give it a go: - Decide on the theme – taking into consideration your students´ interests. Fit your idea into the official curriculum. - Explain the idea to your students and motivate them towards it – carry out some icebreaker activities. - Create the groups – Many factors should be considered when organizing groups. Reflect on them before making a decision. - Develop the project – although dispensable, ICT is normally a part of any project, developing the students´ digital competence especially how to use a laptop or projector. - Present the final product – either in a physical (drawing, mind map, network, ) or a digital way. - Share the results with other students. - The teacher´s main role is that of supervising, observing and helping when necessary. Assessment will include individual and group assessment, not just from the teacher´s point of view, but also from the students´ one, in the form of self-evaluation and co-evaluation (rubrics needed). - It will always be a challenge the first time for new things, but it is strongly recommended.
